| Healing from the Hurricanes Workshop Series |
| We have heard from so many people that they have pictures from the storms in recent years that they would like to scrapbook, but they are afraid to start on their own because of the emotional pain and stress involved. We believe scrapbooking can be extremely therapeutic, and believe that this very focused series of Workshops we have scheduled may assist those who feel they are ready to begin working on this. We wish we had photographs and stories of how our families survived prior hurricanes, Betsy and Camille, as we know there was a lot of property damage and a lot of pain involved with those storms, too. If we had them, we feel we would be better able to understand what they went through and how they handled it all, and most of all, have a better understanding of the real people they were. We believe that scrapbooking the recent storms will help your future family members to have these opportunities that we did not. We understand many people lost all or most of their photos in the storms, and you may feel you are unable to scrapbook without photographs. Remember that a very important part of scrapbooking is telling the story, and that cameras and photographs did not exist when scrapbooking first began, centuries ago. Some of the other Workshop participants may have one or more photographs that may help you tell your story, and you may even find something useful on an Internet website (we’ll give you a list of a few of them). Or, you can simply use embellishments to illustrate your story. All of us here at Scrappersaurus know the pain caused by these storms on a first-hand basis, not only because we lost our first store and only means of income (which happened to have all of Dee’s personal scrapbooking supplies, tools, and photos inside) but also because many of our friends and family members lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. A resident of Port Sulphur, one of the hardest-hit places by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, is the grandmother of our Design Team Member and Teacher, Heather. She has finished her own Hurricane Katrina scrapbook, and said she intends to scrapbook any future storms that come. She has already included Hurricane Ike in it, as well. Heather said her grandmother told her it was a difficult task for her to do, but that the feeling of relief after she finished was wonderful. While we cannot promise you that scrapbooking your losses will not be painful, we are hoping that doing so will help you to move on toward your future, and heal somewhat from the pain the storms have left behind. We have put together a very focused list of topics to cover in these Workshops, in an effort to help us stay on track and get through this as easily yet thoroughly as possible. The topic list is, by no means, set in stone, and you should adapt it to best tell your story. The topics we have here are suggestions to get you started, and we will do our best to assist each participant to be able to utilize the day’s topic for their individual needs. This is not something we will rush through or put a time limit on, and because we have them scheduled for Saturdays, you will be able to stay and work on your layout(s) as long as you feel you need or want to. During the Workshops, we will have the ability to scan, copy, and reprint any photographs or mementos that participants wish to share, and we also will have a list of Internet links where you can download additional photographs of the major hurricanes that came through South Louisiana during the past few years. If you wish, you may bring your own laptop, as we always have free Wi-Fi here at Scrappersaurus, and you can search the Web for other photos or sites that you feel useful to you, and we can print them for you for a nominal fee. You may have already come across a website or photos that you wish to use, but haven’t printed them yet; let us print them for you as you need them. Some of you may even have photos sent to you in e-mail by relatives or friends, and not know how to print them from your e-mail. We will assist you in doing this, and print those photos for you, as well. If you kept a diary or journal before, during, or after the hurricane(s), we can scan/copy and reprint any or all of the page(s) to include with your layouts. Here is a list of topics planned: Life Before the Storm Preparing for the Storm Evacuation from the Storm Area Landfall of the Storm Where You Evacuated To What You Did During Evacuation Preparation to Return Home Coming Home After the Storm What was left? – Exterior Damage What was left? – Interior Damage Repairs and/or Demolition of Your Home, Business, or Property Assistance/Assistants in Rebuilding Unusual Sights Remembering Those Who Left Life Changes We hope you’ll consider joining us for these Workshops, and coming together as a community to heal together as well as to enjoy our craft together. Feel free to call or e-mail us with any questions, comments, or concerns. |
